School Story and Memories:

Will submit later

What brought your family to Mexico (if applicable), and how long did they live in the DF? How many years did you attend the American School (or other school)?

We moved to Monterrey, Mexico, in 1957, when my father was asked by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to supervise the supervisors of meetinghouses for the Church in Northern Mexico. I attended the AHS in Monterrey. In 1961 we moved to Mexico City, when my father was asked to supervisor all construction for the Church in Mexico. I attended the AHS in Mexico City until graduating in 1966.

Where did you live in the DF (street, Colonia, etc.)?

Petrarca St, Col. Polanco, and in Las Lomas

To what clubs and teams did you belong, and in what other activities did you participate?

I played on the AHS varsity basketball team for three years. Joined the track team my Sophomore; broke my arm high jumping. Was awarded the Athlete of the Year award for the Sophomore class, playing baseball with a cast on my hand. Life was good LOL. I was also a Boy Scout.

I played basketball on a church team with Corky.  He was an amazing player.  I remember he used to chew gum and would stick it behind his ear.  His sister, Jana, is also a wonderful person.  We are all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Our basketball team was made up of about eight of us in the English Speaking Branch of the Church.  We played against other teams made up of members of the Church.  We lost every single game we played up until the end.  Our last game was against the Roma Ward.  We shared the chruch meetinghouse with them.  They were undefeated in the tournament.  We played the game on a concrete basketball court out behind the building.  There was no time clock or scoreboard.  At halftime we were far behind.  The ladies in the Roma Ward were preparing a celebration dinner in the kitchen of the meetinghouse.  As I walked by the kitchen at halftime, I overheard one of the ladies say that they felt sorry for us.  At the end of the game, people started cheering for us.  We thought it was because they felt sorry for us too.  It turned out that we had won the game by two points, one basket.  That meant that the Roma Ward team was now tied for the championship with the Ermita Ward, that had lost only one game too.  When Roma played Ermita for the championship, Roma lost, all because of our two point win.  What a game!  Corky was the hero of that win.

Hi Jana,
Long time no communicate with LOL. Happy Birthday! You finally made 21? I'm not sure you are aware, by my younger brother, Dale, probably owes his life to your parents. At the age of 12 he was catching for a couple of the girls baseball teams while they were practicing. One of the girls swung at the ball and then let the bat fly. It hit Dale in the shin. He was taken to the Dr. for an x-ray, nothing showed up. About a year later he was going down the stairs into the dressing rooms under the gym. He slipped, and his shoe heel caught on the step. His shin began hurting something fierce. He was taken to several Drs. The x-rays showed a tumor in the bone. Dr. Miranda, informed my parents that the ?)was malignant and that he would need to amputate his leg to save his life. Your parents suggested that he be taken to the American British Cowdery(ABC?) to see Dr. Cadaval, a Dr. they were acquainted with. Dr. Cadaval took his own tests, came up with the same results, but said it wouldn't do any good to amputate, as that would just put Dale into more pain and suffering than necessary. He suggested surgery to clean out the bone marrow. He performed the operation, found the tumor larger than expected, and didn't have enough donor material, so he had to open his hip to remove bone and marrow from it to put into his leg. Dale wasn't expected to live more than a few months. My Dad and President Harold Brown gave him a Priesthood blessing to be healed. At the time Dale was a little chubby kid that others poked fun at. Some time later, Dr. Cadaval informed my parents that Dale was his "miracle boy". The material from his leg went to the lab and all of the results were reversed. The tumor was not malignant. He told them that his legs would be very different in length, as Dale was just starting into his teenage growth cycle. Today, Dale is 6'2", and both his legs are exactly the same length, and he has never had any trouble with the leg. No telling what might have happened had his leg been amputated. We will always be indebted to your parents for that. Abrazos to you and yours, and again, Happy Birthday! Jay R McClellan
